The following is an assignment from Paul's BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts at Waltham Forest College 1993-1995. "ABOUT ME - HAT MAKING" My name is Paul Lewis. I am 22 years old and was born in Clacton on Sea, Essex. Most of the time I am fairly strong minded and pretty well motivated towards what I am doing, and when I really want something in life, I'm prepared to do my utmost to achieve what I want. However, when I'm feeling a bit down I can be very negative and unreasonable, but I soon snap out of that attitude, as I am on the whole happy with my life. I don't enjoy my own company and much prefer to be around people, so I lead a healthy social life and don't sit in very often, but I see this as a good point, as I have some good friends. I have many dreams in life, so I suppose I could be a bit too dreamy about life sometimes and not always realistic, but I see this as harmless. I enjoy creative writing very much and hope to be a playwriter as well as an actor one day. But there are many jobs connected to the performing arts of which I would like to do, so I feel I have many opportunities open to me. I think I'm a good listener when other people have problems, but find things much more difficult to deal with when the problems are my own. I love to listen to music and I appreciate all types of music, so I see myself as quite a musically influenced person and I enjoy writing songs and poetry, as I can express thoughts from the past and present in this way. When designing my hat, I think I'm going to take my dreamy side to influence part of the hat by displaying clouds and stars somewhere on the hat. I also wish to display something that will show I like music. The style of hat I wish to produce will be a high top hat and very colourful. The top of the hat is to be star shaped, the rim of the hat is to give the effects of clouds, using cotton wool. On one side of the hat I will have the effect of water falling from the clouds and in the water there will be fish swimming in either directions to show my birth sign. On the other side I want the effect that the clouds are raining musical notes. Somewhere and probably hanging from the star, the hat will have gold coins hanging from it to symbolize how I feel I need money for decent security. "FINAL DESIGN" My Final Design was designed to make at very low cost, using mainly scrap materials. It is also more practical to make and less time consuming. This was to ensure the completion by the deadline date. The star top resembles my dreamy side along with the clouds. The fifty pound note at the top resembles the importance of money to me. The books resemble my liking to write and the musical notes say that I like music very much. The fish state my star sign and a top hat states that I am English, as a top hat is a traditional English hat.
